Have you ever got an electric bill in the mail that just blew you away? You had no idea how much energy your house was actually using, and you couldn’t figure out why? This is actually a common scenario. Many people don’t realize how much electricity a device or an appliance can actually use, and the result is an extremely high bill, and no knowledge of how to avoid that in the future.

This is why you might want to consider an electricity usage monitor. These devices monitor the electricity being used by the different appliances in your home, so you can have a better idea of just where your energy costs are being generated. There are many different monitors to choose from, from the very simple to the very high-tech. Here are five that we think are worth considering, with our pick for the best overall monitor at the end.

While the Kill A Watt EZ Power monitor is a simple, no-frills option, the Sense energy monitor goes in the completely opposite direction. This feature-laden, high-tech device uses the latest technology to monitor all of your household’s usage and report it to you through your phone, no matter where you might be.

Rather than plugging the device into an appliance, the Sense literally plugs into your house’s entire electrical supply through the breaker box (professional installation might be required, depending on your skill level). Then, the Sense works behind the scenes, detecting and analyzing as various devices and appliances turn on and off and use electricity. As time goes on, your Sense starts to recognize various devices, letting you know when devices are on or off, and monitoring their usage.

What’s more, Sense uses the latest technology to report its measurements to you through your android or Apple device. Monitor your usage in real time, no matter where you are. Worried you left the oven on? The Sense can tell. Worried that your sump pump is working too hard? Set an alert. Customize your Sense experience so that you always know what’s on and what’s not.

WHAT WE LIKE

The Sense comes with a remarkable array of features to keep you fully informed of your home’s energy consumption. The longer it stays connected, the more it works, recognizing devices and functions. After a few months, the Sense claims to be able to recognize the energy signature and usage of dozens of devices, allowing you to know at all times where your energy is going.

PROS

  • Uses the latest technology to fully monitor and report energy usage
  • Recognizes dozen of devices
  • Set alerts to let you know when certain appliances have been on too long
  • Monitor your usage from anywhere with the Sense ap

CONS

  • Requires extra installation to hook up to your hoe’s breaker boxes
  • Some Sense devices struggle to recognize the various devices in a home

Similar to the Sense, the Eyedro Home Solar & Energy Monitor is a system that plugs directly into your home’s circuit breaker and works from there. From that description alone you might think this is a similar product to the Sense, but it really isn’t. It comes with much less as far as functions and features go, and the one extra that it does claim – the ability to monitor your solar power, if you have such a system – isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

First, let’s talk about what it actually does. Just like the Sense, this snaps directly into your home circuits. The instructions claim that this is easy enough that anyone can do it, but honestly, if you’re working with electricity in that way it’s always good to have a professional do it if you don’t know what you’re doing. Once it’s hooked up, the Eyedro monitors your usage in real time, sending information that you can easily monitor via the Eyedro website.

Furthermore, the Eyedro site claims that this unit can monitor your Solar power generation and consumption, but we have found that claim to be misleading, as it does not actually measure how much energy your solar system is generating. We’re not 100% certain what Eyedro is claiming, in this instance.

WHAT WE LIKE

This system monitors your overall energy usage, and it does it well. But there’s really nothing that makes this system stand out. Unlike the Sense, it doesn’t have the ability to learn and monitor different devices. While you can go to the Eyedro website and check your usage, there is not a dedicated app either, making it less user-friendly than competitors.

PROS

  • Easy set up
  • Monitor usage in real time

CONS

  • No dedicated app
  • Customer support is lacking
  • “Solar power” monitoring is non-existent

The Poniie PN2000 is a plug-in energy monitor that is in many respects similar to the P3 International. Plug individual devices and appliances in and let it monitor usage in real time. The PN2000 boasts an impressive resolution of 0.01W, 0.01V and 0.001A, which means that it detects and reports even the smallest amount of energy usage. This accuracy gives you peace of mind that you can really learn what each appliance is doing, and how best to reduce energy spending.

In addition, the LDC display is large, easy to read and comes with the ability to turn on the backlight, meaning you don’t have to stay close or press buttons to keep the display on. It even has memory, letting you “save” an appliance’s performance for future consideration.

After a few months, the Sense claims to be able to recognize the energy signature and usage of dozens of devices, allowing you to know at all times where your energy is going.

PROS

  • Easy to use; simply plug and play
  • Large LCD display with a stay-on backlit feature
  • Memory allows you to store a device’s consumption for later

CONS

  • Does not take current data to predict future usage
  • No wifi, app or other remote monitoring abilities

Our final entry in this article is another simple plug and play device, but it’s definitely worthy of consideration. The Kuman KW47-US might seem simple, but it actually has one or two features that make it an interesting choice.

Just like the PN2000 and the P3 Internations, this no-frills device has no app or wifi connection. SImply plug it into an outlet, plug the appliance in question in, and let it work. Watch your energy usage in real time, reported in up to seven different modes that make sense and give you an idea of how much energy is being used and how much it might cost you.

There are, however, a few extra features to note: on eis the “overload” feature which will let you know when the usage has exceeded the device’s rating. This can save you the hassle of a burned-out system. The other feature we like is the battery, which allows the Kuman KW47-US to remember a rating, even if you unplug it and move it somewhere else. This can allow you to monitor and compare the usage of several different appliances and devices.

WHAT WE LIKE

This is another bare-bones entry, but don’t let that turn you away. It does exactly what it’s supposed to, monitoring an individual appliance for usage, giving you the information you need to make informed decisions. It might not have all of the features of its more advanced competitors, but sometimes simpler is better. In the case of the KunanKW47-US, that is certainly the case.

PROS

  • Easy to use
  • Rechargeable battery saves readings as you move it around the house

CONS

  • Limited features — no wifi, app or other advanced features.

Conclusion

As you can see, the world of energy monitors runs from the very basic to the incredibly complex. Depending on what you’re looking for you can find just about any model that fits your needs. However, when it comes down to it, what you need is an energy monitor that is simple, easy to use, and worth the price. For all of these reasons, and more, the P3 International P4460 Kill A Watt EZ Electricity Usage Monitor is the best choice. It combines the ease of plug-and-play technology with enough features to help you make real-time decisions, and its ability to forecast future usage really gives you the tools you need to save energy and money in the long run.
